- 2 slices of your favorite bread - I love using a thick-cut brioche or sourdough, but honestly, any bread works!
- 1 medium apple - A good Granny Smith is great because it’s a little tart and holds its shape, but feel free to use Fuji, Honeycrisp, or whatever you have on hand.
- 1 tablespoon of butter (salted or unsalted is fine)
- 1 tablespoon of brown sugar (or maple syrup if you prefer!)
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- A tiny pinch of nutmeg - Optional, but it really adds that classic u0022pieu0022 flavor.
- A pinch of salt - It just balances everything out.
- A splash of water (about 1-2 tablespoons)
First things first, prep your apple. Peel it, core it, and chop it into small, bite-sized cubes. Think about the size of a dice.
Grab a small skillet or saucepan and melt the butter over medium heat. Once it starts to foam a little, toss in your chopped apples.
Sauté the apples for a couple of minutes until they begin to soften. Then, sprinkle in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and the pinch of salt. Give it all a good stir to coat the apples. It's going to start smelling amazing right about now!
Pour in that little splash of water. This helps create a bit of a syrupy sauce and prevents the sugar from burning. Let it all simmer for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the sauce has thickened up.
While your apples are doing their thing, pop your bread slices in the toaster. You want them nicely golden and crisp to hold up to the yummy topping.
Once the toast is ready and the apples are perfect, just spoon that warm, gooey apple mixture right over the top. Serve it up right away! Sometimes I'll add a dollop of yogurt or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if I'm feeling extra decadent. Enjoy!
