Ingredients

  • 2 slices of your favorite bread - I love using a thick-cut brioche or sourdough, but honestly, any bread works!
  • 1 medium apple - A good Granny Smith is great because it’s a little tart and holds its shape, but feel free to use Fuji, Honeycrisp, or whatever you have on hand.
  • 1 tablespoon of butter (salted or unsalted is fine)
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar (or maple syrup if you prefer!)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • A tiny pinch of nutmeg - Optional, but it really adds that classic u0022pieu0022 flavor.
  • A pinch of salt - It just balances everything out.
  • A splash of water (about 1-2 tablespoons)

Instructions

  • First things first, prep your apple. Peel it, core it, and chop it into small, bite-sized cubes. Think about the size of a dice.
  • Grab a small skillet or saucepan and melt the butter over medium heat. Once it starts to foam a little, toss in your chopped apples.
  • Sauté the apples for a couple of minutes until they begin to soften. Then, sprinkle in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and the pinch of salt. Give it all a good stir to coat the apples. It's going to start smelling amazing right about now!
  • Pour in that little splash of water. This helps create a bit of a syrupy sauce and prevents the sugar from burning. Let it all simmer for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the sauce has thickened up.
  • While your apples are doing their thing, pop your bread slices in the toaster. You want them nicely golden and crisp to hold up to the yummy topping.
  • Once the toast is ready and the apples are perfect, just spoon that warm, gooey apple mixture right over the top. Serve it up right away! Sometimes I'll add a dollop of yogurt or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if I'm feeling extra decadent. Enjoy!
